Scattered Hexagon Pillow…

July 12, 2013 by krisha

For years I avoided learning how to sew in a zipper. I wanted to make wristlets for my Etsy shop, but was completely intimidated at the thought of sewing a zipper. Until one day, with a tutorial in hand, I just buckled down at my sewing machine and schooled myself on zippers. To my surprise…there was nothing remotely difficult about it at all. Fast forward to last week when I started working on this pillow. Initially, I was just going to make two flaps on the back that overlap and hold the pillow in place. I didn’t want to do a zipper, because I thought it would be too bulky of a look for my pillow. Then, I stumbled onto the invisible zipper. I had seen them before, but always assumed they were difficult. I mean they’re invisible? There has to be some degree of difficulty to invisible-ness. I was wrong. So wrong.

Anyway, I’m in the middle of a room re-do. A while back, I had posted about redoing Annabelle’s old room for Jacks. I was going to give him a room to himself and put the two girls in a room together. They were to have bunk beds and Jacks was gonna have this really cool spindle bed I’ve been storing in my garage. Well, as soon as Jacks heard the girls were gonna have bunk beds, he wanted one too. Of course. So, my plans were altered and Mr. Jacks & Kate built the bunk bed for Jacks and Savannah. I’m now in the process of outfitting their beds with pillows.

I found this invisible zipper tutorial here. I read it through a few times, then I did my thing. Way easy! In fact, I like it better than a regular zipper install. Though, you can sew these with a regular zipper foot, I opted to buy the invisible zipper foot for my machine.

After reading up on the invisible zipper,  I pulled out my poor man’s linen {Osnaburg} and whipped up this little cutie. You may have noticed one of the latest design trends is the hexagon. I asked myself, Why the hexagon? I don’t know. It just works…six sides and all that. I wanted to implement it into an appliqué design on a pillow. However, I didn’t want to just slap on one giant hex…because that would be weird. Instead, I thought maybe a bunch of small ones, sporadically placed. And so, this scattered hexagon pillow was born.

Materials I used:

  • Invisible zipper
  • Osnaburg fabric
  • Scrap pieces of fabric
  • Scissors
  • Appliqué supplies {found here}
  • 18 x 18 pillow insert

Refer to my appliqué tutorials found here and here.
Cut pillow fabric to required size.
Make a hexagon template.
Using the template, trace desired amounts of hexagons onto Heat n’ Bond.
Iron together interfacing, fabric, and Heat n’ Bond.
Cut out hexagons.
Arrange hexagons in a scattered design, leaving a small space between them.
Iron down and appliqué using a zig zag stitch on the front piece of the pillow fabric.
Sew pillow cover with invisible zipper.

I love the end result! It’s exactly how I had envisioned!

July 2, 2013 by krisha

Dear children: Here’s the deal. Sometimes, when I’m really tired, because it’s 11 pm…and I’m so over hearing your sweet, little voices I may agree to buy you something in exchange for you going to sleep. This includes, but is not limited to a dog, a nemo, a crocodile, and 2 turtles. Please don’t expect to actually go to the pet store upon you waking up the following morning at 6 am. You will be disappointed to learn that your mother tricked you. Sorry. I’m crafty that way…but, hey… here’s some personalized candy packs! Are we good?

Appliqué mason jar lids…

June 2, 2013 by krisha

4 weeks into my weekly appliqué series and I’ve already missed a week. I just couldn’t get it done last week, but I doubt anyone was freaking on that one. So, this week, I have this cool idea: appliqué mason jar lids.  Fabric lids on mason jars are nothing new, this is just my personal spin.

How to save a dress with appliqué…

May 6, 2013 by krisha

When I first started Jacks & Kate, I was still fairly new to appliqué. My first pieces were nothing to gab about. No really. It has only been through practice that I’ve honed my skills and developed a technique that works for me. One of the biggest draws to appliqué for me, was it’s versatility. You can appliqué many, many things. Even paper. Plus, if I could draw it, then I could transform it into appliqué. Because I love it so much and I want to encourage others to pursue this art, I’ve decided to start a weekly series on things you can appliqué. If you’re new and not sure where to start, you can view my two part tutorial here and here. First in the series, how to save a dress with appliqué.

River Otter Gets an Ascot…

April 27, 2013 by krisha

One of my biggest pet peeves is when total strangers try to talk to my kids. I understand they mean well, but we practice “Don’t talk to strangers” in our house.  I don’t make any exceptions, not even for the nice elderly lady at the grocery store. Besides, “please” and “thank you”, I don’t want my kids talking to people they don’t know. So when strangers approach my kids and try to make harmless conversation, more often than not, they won’t respond. I usually do the talking and they are quick to chastise me that I shouldn’t talk to strangers. Such was the case today…

Finding inspiration and a paint splattered appliqué…

April 27, 2013 by krisha

I have been in such a funk this week. Completely unmotivated to create anything. I always get like that when I’m feeling overwhelmed. Not overwhelmed in the, “I have too many things to do” sense. More like, my brain never shuts off. If you are cut from the creative cloth, then you know what I’m talking about. The ideas…thoughts…plans…they are always running through my mind. They never stop. Literally, I have at least 20 projects waiting to be blogged about. When will I ever find the time? Never! I get so overwhelmed with all of it, because I want to do it all and that has left me feeling uninspired. Until…

24, A Shunning, and a Ruffled Tank Dress…

April 17, 2013 by krisha

Lately, I’ve been trying to expand my Netflix horizons beyond the TV series.  I never watch regular TV, so I can easily get wrapped up in these series on Netflix. Currently, I’m deep into 24. The series that has no end in the foreseeable future. OMG! Seriously, how did anyone watch this show live? I’ve missed countless episodes..but, it’s like I haven’t missed one.

Jack: Mr. President this is Jack Bauer.

POTUS: Put me through to Jack Bauer.

Jack: Jack Bauer, Mr. President.

POTUS: Jack, it’s David Palmer. Or Charles Logan. Or Wayne Palmer.

Jack: Yes Mr. President.

POTUS: Hi, I’m Mr. President.

Jack: Thank you Mr. President.

Yep…that pretty much sums it up! I’m convinced Jack becomes the POTUS in the last season. Don’t tell me.  …

Tshirt Dress Tutorial

My BFF has waited what seems like an eternity for this dress! And she paid for it! She actually ordered a shirt, but I ordered the wrong size. So she decided on a dress instead. I think that was almost 8 months ago. I even told her recently that I just couldn’t make it, no motivation to sew. So true…but, even so…c’mon! I didn’t want to make it, not even for my bestie!! Never, not once did she ask me about the dress. So thanks Steph…for letting me be such a flake and waiting so long without ever a complaint! Finally, yesterday out of nowhere I got inspired to knock this out. I figured since I was gonna do this, why not do a tutorial also? This is going to be a picture heavy post. I like to include as many close up images as I can when doing a sewing tutorial as I think it helps to follow along.

I wasn’t really looking for a goat just yet, but a sweet Momma was emotionally overwhelmed and was asking for help. Walter had a difficult birth so he was unable to nurse and won’t yet take a bottle, so he is syringe fed every four hours. Sitting with Walter, feeding him at 4 am.. I was reminded of all the baby feedings and I thought I don’t miss this at all. 😂 But he sure is cute!

So it really came as no surprise upon arriving at the park the other day that Annie would instantly find a Mockingbird sitting on the ground unable to move.

Annie: Mom, we have to help it.
Me: Of course, but we were supposed to go for ice cream after the park.
Annie: I would rather help the bird.

After looking at the little guy, I could tell he likely wouldn’t make it. He died en route. Sterling Lance she named him as she does all her rescues, didn’t die alone under the tree. A few weeks ago it was Gloria, an injured dove I woke up to find in my garage in a makeshift habitat. And many more before her!

We returned Sterling Lance to the park and went for ice cream. Every kind of kid flavor available from cotton candy to birthday cake and this child, old soul and all, requests, “One butter pecan cone, please.” I just could not love her more. ❤️
Last week we celebrated my first born turning 13. Last week we celebrated my first born turning 13. Bittersweet, of course, but aren’t they all? I was not prepared for the many changes in a young boy from 12 to 13. Especially the voice. I didn’t even see it coming. Oh how I miss his high pitched little boy voice. Just looking at pictures from his 12th birthday and comparing them to this one, the baby look has faded away and the beginnings of a young man are taking hold. At 13 he stands nearly 5’8 and is my reacher for all the things. He is a good kid and a simple soul. For his birthday all he asked was for offshore fishing, a chocolate chip cookie cake, and a sushi dinner. He got his first cell phone (no internet or social media), good books, art supplies, and handmade gifts and cards from his siblings. Happy 13th Birthday, Jacks! You were and always will be my best first baby. ❤️

I can see the season changing again and it feels good to be in this familiar space of creating with these great loves of my life.

This girl right here is next level. She’s the girl who snuggles her bunny, even after he bit her moments before. She is unwavering in her love. She’s the girl who while stirring the rice, spills it all over the counter, but happily scoops it up and declares, “free samples!” She sees the good. She is non stop laughter. She is LOUD, people. She spends hours painting cards for others and if you’ve been blessed to receive one from her, it’s her whole heart on paper. Give her a cheeseburger and a book to read outside and you can call it good. She’s an absolute light in this dark world. I don’t deserve her, but thank you God for your graces and blessing me so. We bailed on a traditional Thanksgiving this year We bailed on a traditional Thanksgiving this year and instead feasted on the beauty of the Ten Thousand Islands. We explored the driftwood forests and found several rare shells. There were plenty of live shells to observe and Scruffy kept retrieving them from the water, but none were harmed. We found several washed up crab traps and the kids worked hard to rescue a stone crab who would have soon died like its cage-mates if not for their efforts. It was a Thanksgiving to remember for sure and I’m incredibly thankful everyday that we live in this wonderland of Florida. ❤️❤️❤️
