It’s been a while since I’ve blogged. I’ve been attached to my sewing machine for like 2 months straight. Quality time with my kids was scarce…play dates even more scarce. In an attempt to win back their adoration and suppress my mommy guilt, I put together a New Year’s Eve countdown station for them.
It was super easy to put together. I grabbed 10 boxes from a local liquor store…wrapped them in brown kraft paper…then I traced 1-10 and painted each number with glitter glue. Underneath each box was a task or a treat. We started with 10 and worked our way down to 1. They had a blast!
We made our own party hats out of newspaper, decorated time capsules, colored books of what we want for 2013. Some boxes had treats like chocolate balls, bubbles, and ice cream sundaes. We played games…like Headbands. Have you ever played this game? It’s pretty hysterical to play with little kids. They pretty much tell you what’s on your head when they are asking questions about their own card…
Savannah: Um…is it a paintbrush?
Me: No. Time’s up!
Me: Is it a paintbrush?
Savannah: WOW! Mommy wins again!!!
But then there’s my husband. He had a sandwich card on his head the entire game…and couldn’t guess it. I even broke the rules to help him out. No..not really…I was just tired of looking at a freaking sandwich on his head. Here we are on round 400 of, “PS…you suck at Headbands!”
Chris: Is it a food?
Me: Yes.
Chris: Is it a vegetable?
Me: In the middle.
Chris: Is it a meat?
Me: In the middle.
Chris: Is it a Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich?
Me: ??????
One of the highlights of the night was under box # 6. A Fuji Mini Instax. It’s like a Polaroid…that takes credit card size instant photos. I highly recommend getting one of these. The film can be a bit pricey…but there’s just something about instantly holding a picture…and as a bonus for everyone’s listening pleasure…you can repeatedly sing, “sh..sh..sh..shake it like a Polaroid picture” The kids thought it was like magic {the pictures..not my voice} and quickly went through 20 exposures. There were a lot of scary close ups and shots with cut off appendages…but still so much fun!
But…the biggest hit of the night…a sparkle hunt. Box # 8. I had this idea to sprinkle iridescent glitter in different areas in the backyard. After it was dark out and I had put Annabelle to bed…I told them a story of the New Year’s Eve fairy and her sparkles…they lifted the box and found two mini flashlights that I got for $1 each. I barely got the story out… before they bolted out the back in search of her sparkles. Hilarious! A really fun and inexpensive thing to do with the kids…any time of year. For now…I’ve been recruited to build fairy houses to capture her.
Happy 2013!!!
