Ribbon Spool Pillbox hat
Ribbon spool pillbox hat tutorial:
I’ve been saving my ribbon spools for a quite a while. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them…until a few months ago.
Ribbon spool
Old book pages
Elastic
Tulle
Scissors
Rotary cutter/mat
Craft knife
Pompom trim
Chenille stem
Drill
Ornament caps
glitter pens {post pompom trim attack}
and here’s how you do it…
- carefully trim around one side of the ribbon spool. do not remove paper as this is the top of the hat, you just want to get a flush edge.
- remove the paper from the other side of the ribbon spool. this is the bottom, so you can remove completely.
- with a craft knife, gently scrape away any glue or rough edges.
- trace the top of the spool on paper of your choosing.
- then trace another circle approximately 1/4 inch bigger than your first {I used a small bowl}.
- cut around perimeter of the bigger circle and with your glue stick…attach to top of hat.
- dab glue around the top portion of hat and fold down the overlap so that it’s attached to the spool.
- using the spool as a guide, mark a cutting line approximately 1/2 inch larger than the spool {leaving 1/4 inch at top and bottom}.
- if using book pages, cut off any excess blank areas.
- depending on your paper size, you might need to piece pages to obtain the right length. to do so…just secure pages with glue.
- fold down 1/4 inch along the length of your paper {this will match up to the top part of the hat}
- wrap paper around spool and make a cutting mark to get rid of the excess.
- to minimize wrinkles, add glue to only the top portion of the hat.
- continue gluing until you have overlapped 1/4 inch.
- add glue to the bottom inside of spool.
- fold under the remaining 1/4 inch of paper.
- add embellishments such as pompom trim and tulle with hot glue.
- I added a mini crown {ornament topper turned on it’s back } on top of the tulle {if adding with hot glue, take caution…the glue heats up the metal quick..even at the top}
- add chenille stem if desired
- drill two small holes {one on each side. this is for your elastic}
- to get an accurate measurement and secure fit…secure elastic in one hole and place hat on child’s head. allow 1 inch to tie through other hole….cut and tie a knot.
Following a vicious pompom trim attack…I salvaged the hat with some scallops and a glitter pen.
…hmmm…don’t get too excited Annabelle…and now Sir Elton John…
The possibilities are endless with this project. It can be done to match any party theme. How cute would this be at a little girl’s tea party? A make your own pillbox hat party? Love it!
Enjoy!
